Watch out for Newborn Baby's Breath Sounds

Newborn breath sounds that occur occasionally are generally normal. But Mother still needs to be vigilant, because sometimes the sound of breathing in this baby can be a sign that your child is experiencing an illness, especially if accompanied by certain symptoms. No need to panic if the breath of the newborn Little sounds or sounds like a snort. This is because the newborn still needs time to adapt to breathe through his nose. This condition usually lasts for several weeks. Breath sounds in newborns can also be caused by mucus in the nose. The baby's airway has not been able to clear the mucus properly by itself, so the air flow when breathing through the nose will make a sound. In addition, newborn airways are still narrow in size. It can also make mucus easily get stuck in the airway and make sounds when it breathes. However, breathing sounds in newborns can also indicate your child has difficulty breathing. One reason is bronchiolitis. This condition is usually accompanied by other symptoms, namely the baby looks crowded, pale, bluish lips, fever, and weakness.

Causes and Symptoms of Bronchiolitis

Bronchiolitis is inflammation due to viral infection of the bronchioles, the smallest respiratory tract in the lungs. Bronchiolitis often occurs in children under two years. Even newborns can experience it, but it is more common at 2-6 months of age and premature babies. Symptoms of bronchiolitis include:
  • Cough
  • Nasal congestion
  • Lots of mucus (snot) in the nose
  • Short and fast breathing lasting more than two days
  • Wheezing breath
  • Fever
  • Fussy and difficult to sleep
Although bronchiolitis is generally mild, babies with certain conditions can experience severe bronchiolitis, for example babies born prematurely, suffer from congenital heart disease, or have birth defects.

Treatment of bronchiolitis

Newborn breath sounds caused by bronchiolitis need medical attention. If the baby looks stuffy, the doctor will do a vacuum in the baby's airway to relieve breathing. If needed, the doctor will also give oxygen to the baby, as well as IV fluids to prevent dehydration. For mild bronchiolitis, treatment can be done independently at home by:
  • Give breast milk more often.
  • Clean the baby's nose from mucus. You do this by dripping with a sterile salt water solution on his nose.
  • Keep baby from dirty air, such as dust and cigarette smoke.
  • Creating a comfortable and calm atmosphere, so that the baby can rest well.
With adequate care, bronchiolitis will usually improve within 10 to 14 days. Giving antibiotics is not necessary, because bronchiolitis is caused by a virus. If there is a fever, a fever-lowering medication, such as paracetamol, can be given. To make it easier to breathe while sleeping, lay the baby with his head slightly higher position. However, avoid supporting the baby's head with a pillow if he is under one year old. Newborn breathing sounds are generally a normal thing, but still monitor the condition of your child. Beware of breathing sounds accompanied by shortness, the baby looks pale or bluish, and does not want to suckle. If it's like this, immediately take your child to the doctor to get treatment.
